Drive Train Axles Bearings problem
2003 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 2003 explorer with 4WD, V6, and automatic transmission with 105K miles. In the past week it has developed an increasing vibration that seems to come from the front end. The frequency of the vibration (and noise) increases with speed. Also, the vibration is much worse in a left turn (long sweeping run) and is almost quiet in a sweeping right turn. I initially suspected wheel bearings but this truck doesn't have them (at least not like I'm used to) instead the bearings appear to be part of the front drive axle? What do you think? And is the corrective action within the ability of a die hard do-it-yourselfer with a garage and a good tool box?

Hi:
It sounds like the right hub bearing is bad. Here is a picture of what you need.

It is an involved job, so I recommend a good repair manual, but if you follow directions, you should be ok. Also, this is an expensive part. Most likely over 200.00, so when you remove the old one, make sure it is the problem. However, based on your description, it sounds correct.

Let me know if this helps.
