Transmission problem
1997 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

It did happen when going around 70mph I had to stop quickly, so I disengage O/D by clicking switch in drive shaft (kind of slowingwith engine). It changed to lower gear, so started slowing down, then suddenly started a clunking noise like two gears slipping each other. RPM dropped to 780-1000 but truck still moving same speed. Noise went away as it reached 40mph. So, I stopped totally and then step on gas and all gears changed Ok. Even to O/D engaged ok aswell.
Noise shows up erraticly when slowing down from above 50mph (more often when doing 65-70mph), it happens when going in O/D condition to lower gear. O/D seems to still working ok (tested at 50-55 mph). Also, noise goes away when step on gas to speed up again. Setting in neutral before slowing down also avoids the noise. 4 wheel drive electrical connector was disconnected. Any idea on what could be? I drivethis truck on hard offroads (slow 20-30 mph) and towing small bass boat (once a month). Serviced transmission w/ filter and fluid change about 6 months ago.

Hi bassangel,

Your problem looks like it is from the universal couplings on the propeller shafts. Either one or more is worn or is stiff.

Engage 2nd gear, accelerate and decelerate and see if the ckunking noise is audible, if it is, then it definetely is the propeller shafts.
