95 Ford Escort Hatchback Cruise Prob

Hi there,

I have a 1995 Ford Escort Hatchback. I drive a considerable distance to work every day, and so one of the most annoying possible problems happened to me yesterday.

My cruise control gave out.

I had the cruise engaged at 70 MPH, and it suddenly decelerated as if I had tapped the brake. I reset the cruise and it accelerated back up to 70 MPH, but only for several seconds before dying again. It was unresponsive from there on out.

On the way home that afternoon, I tried to engage cruise again, and it would not work. On one last ditch effort, it started working and held up til I didn't need it anymore for that trip(about 15-20 min). Today however, it did not work at all. I tried it several times, and at times it would set and then decelerate instantly, and at other times, it wouldn't even set.

It feels like a connection problem to me(loose wire?), Thus the sporadic function, but I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination.

So I have two questions. One, is this something simple I can fix at home? And if not, how much would a job like this typically cost me? Thanks!

Hi, here's the info you requested.

It's a 1.8 litre engine, auto trans, with 112,000 miles. As I said, I'm no mechanic, so I'm not sure how to determine if it's factory cruise? Could you please explain?

Gotcha. The cruise control is in the steering column, so it is not factory cruise then.

Any idea on what may be wrong? Thanks for any help you can give.
