1999 Ford Escort Two Wheel Drive Automatic

1998 ford excort zx2 died going down the road, now grinds, but won't turn over and start. Tried replacing module won't start, m ade no difference.

What exactly is this car doing? Is it cranking over and refusing to start or just won't crank crank at all/nothing?
