1997 Ford Escort won't idle right

The car runs fine until I come to a stop and it does not want to idle to the point that it will just die if I hold the brake and keep the rpms up it is fine don't have a clue on were to start? Hope you can help THANKS

If the check engine light hasn't come on and it only happens at an idle, I would start by looking for vacuum leaks to the engine.

Do that and let me know what you find.
