My 1.8si has started to make a loud humming noise from the middle of the Car. It gets louder as you get Faster. Also when speeding up from Gears 1-4 you can feel the Car struggling to get going. I assumed it was an Exhaust problem and have had the middle and back part replaced. It now seems ok when changing through the Gears but the noise is still there!

Does the noise start at around 35 mph? If so, check your hub bearings at the wheels. Try this test, get up to the speed the noise starts, then quickly turn left, then straight, then right, do this on a straight section of road, if the noise goes away during one of the turns, the opposite bearing is bad. If noise does not go away, then it's inside the pumpkin, carrier or pinion bearing.
