Hello, our Ford Escort stopped running on the highway last night and we don't know why. It was running just fine with no problems at all and it just stopped suddenly. When it died, I noticed that the temperature gauge was running hot (not in the red, but hot) and there was smoke coming out of the tailpipe. It smelled like burning smoke, not exhaust. Now the car won't start. It sputters and grinds, but that's it. Any ideas what might be going on?

Thank you!

Might check timing belt, it might have jumped time. The belt should be replaced every 50,000 to 60,000 miles. If yours hasn't be replaced, it is very possible that is your problem. It is also possible you blew a head gasket. Is car low on water? Is there water in oil?
