I have the truck listed above 1500. I recently replaced the water pump. After driving for a few minutes, the steering locks and the engine shuts off. I disconnected the battery and reconnected it after 40 minutes. It ran fine on my way home from work. As soon as I got home it shut off on me again. Any idea on what could cause my truck to do such a thing?

Hi,

It could be a few different things. Have you scanned the computer to see if there are related diagnostic trouble codes? Also, did this start after the water pump replacement?

When it stalls, does it restart immediately, or do you need to wait? If you wait, my first suspect is the crankshaft position sensor. But because of its physical location, I don't see how you would have been in contact with it. See pic below. It is behind the starter motor.

Take a look through this link and let me know if it mirrors what you experience:

Let me know.

I have not run a scan for codes. It started doing it after I replaced the water pump. After the vehicle shuts off, I can start it back up.

One of my coworkers was mentioning that the throttle body might need to be reset.

Hi,

The throttle body will go through the relearning itself.

Also, if you can, scan the computer and see if there are codes. Most parts stores will do it free of charge. If it is unsafe to drive, see if they will lend one to you.

Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

Also, make sure the MAF/IAT sensor on the air intake tube was reconnected. It is the tube that runs from the air filter box to the throttle body. See pic 1 below.

Let me know.

I work at a auto parts store. There were no codes and the MAF was never disconnected.

Hi.

Okay, I was going off what you said above that it wasn't scanned yet.

At the front of the engine, I can't think of anything that would cause this. The CKP is behind the starter, which was my first thought. Also, the removal of the air intake tube which includes the MAF would have made things a lot easier. LOL So, I assumed that would have been disconnected.

If the engine shuts off, either spark or fuel is being lost. If there were no symptoms prior, what I would suggest is this. First, if you have a live data scan tool at work, see what the short-term fuel trims are running at. Next, connect the scan tool and drive it until it happens and check freeze frame data to see if there is a loss of spark or any other vital signal.

Let me know if you are comfortable doing that.

Take care,

Joe
