My water pump is leaking do I need to replace it?

The water pump is leaking. It has getting progressively louder and grinding on the metal frame. Today the belt popped on the interstate and I had to get it towed home. My question is can I change the water pump mu self can you help me?

Hi,

Actually, replacing the water pump really isn't too difficult to do. You will need to drain the coolant and the lower radiator hose. Additionally, the belt and fan shroud will need to be removed as well, but if you take your time, you should be fine.

Also, since the coolant will be drained, this is a good time to replace the thermostat as well.
