For the past month I have been trying to figure out why I hear the ticking/knock sound. The knocking comes and goes it is not constant it really goes away when I am driving and comes and goes at idle. We took it to mechanic to have it checked out and they said they don't know what it is without opening up the engine which they didn't do, but that it could be a valve or a rocker or something. I do have a code reading p2097 running to rich post catalytic converter bank 1. And burning oil inside the engine somewhere. Would the knock really be just a rocker or valve? Would it be best to rebuild my engine or just swap for a built one?

Good morning,

The noise could be a lifter or something in the engine.

Can you upload a video so I can hear the noise? That way I can give you a more accurate answer.

After starting it up it took a minute for the knocking to start. But the knocking goes away when I actually drive it, so only does it at idle and not at every idle. It doesn't overheat at all.

Thank you.

Does the oil light flash on?

The noise is not from the valve train. It is in the lower end of the motor such as a bearing, wrist pin or piston.

No, I don't have a oil light on at all not even flashing. I used a stethoscope earlier today when I got home from work. I hear it predominantly on the passenger side. I placed it on the driver side valve cover and it was okay. Then I went to the driver side and put on top of the valve cover up front and I heard it like it was going through my ear lol.

Okay, then remove the valve cover and inspect for anything that may be worn or loose.
