Jumped back in to leave the store, the vehicle would not start?

I'll start by describing the issue. I have a 2014 Jeep JKU Sport. Two times in the last month or so we were driving the vehicle, parked it, and then when we jumped back in to leave the store, the vehicle would not start. We get a lot of DTC's so it's hard to determine the cause. We get a HOTOIL flashing on the dash and sometimes the lock/unlock from the fob stops working. The first time it happened, the vehicle was left for a few days with the battery unplugged, and then it started up, we connected our scan tool, erased the codes, and all seemed well but we did not know the cause. The second time, I could not get the scan tool to connect and disconnect the battery for a short amount of time, 15 minutes or so, did not help. Ultimately, I followed procedures to reset the TCM manually. That got the vehicle to start and then we drove it home but with a lot of error codes and HOTOIL flashing. Once home, I unplugged the battery for a couple of days, then the vehicle started up and I was able to erase the codes, and the vehicle seemed fine again. I do not think the HOTOIL message is accurate since I got it even after the vehicle sat overnight the first night. I have checked the battery and alternator with a load tester, and they passed, although the battery is slightly bloated. I have checked all of the fuses and relays in the fuse box and the only thing of note is the starter relay has some extra resistance across the load circuit when energized, but that does not seem to be affecting the starting since I was able to erase the codes.

When you say scan do you mean a CAN scan? Which is what I would recommend. You can get a CAN scanner (Controller Area Network) from Amazon.

It sounds like the TIPM module is out which a CAN scan can confirm which is common on these cars. It is easy to replace because it-self learns, and no programming is required. Here is the location and how to change it out in case you need it. Check out the images (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

To add more detail and try to clarify what I have seen and tried.

Yes, I mean a CAN Scan. I used an Innova 5160rs and am able to communicate with all the modules and do an all module scan. The only error codes that are coming back consistently right now are:

Body Controls
TIPM - U0184 Active - Lost communication with Radio, but we have an aftermarket radio so I do not think this one is a problem.

Chassis Controls
TPM - has 5 codes that are consistently there even after erasing.
C1581-00 Active Front/Rear Tire pressure sensor location undetermined
C151D-00 Active Tire pressure sensor location undetermined
C1501-96 Active Tire Pressure Sensor 1 - Component Internal Failure
C1580 - 00 Active Left/Right side tire pressure sensor location undetermined
U0001-00 Active CAN C Bus
I am not certain the cause of the TPM codes but suspect the tire sensors themselves may have died being the rig is 9 years old.

Prior to these codes, I had the following pop up when the vehicle first acted up, but they have not come back after being erased.

U0141 - Lost communication with IPM (FCM/TIPM)
P0480 - Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit/Open
U0101 - Lost Communication with TCM
U110E - Lost ambient temperature message
U110C - Lost Fuel Level Message
U1403 - Implausible Fuel Level Signal Message
U0001 - CAN C Bus
U0002 - CAN C Bus off performance - Stayed as a permanent code and then erased itself after driving the car 20 miles.

On the gauge cluster, I had the traction control light come on and the hill assist light come on, while not being responsive to the buttons on the dash, but no specific codes related to those seemed to come up. Then the HOTOIL message would flash and beep, staying on of different amounts of time before going off again.

In an attempt to be proactive, I cleaned every ground I could find on the vehicle and the power connectors going to the TIPM, alternator, and starter prior to the 20 mile test drive mentioned above. Then drove the jeep another 20 miles without new error codes. I am also going to replace the battery and have an optima yellow top ordered.

However, I am beginning to suspect the TIPM as well, is there further testing I can do to confirm its replacement? Being that the error seems intermittent, I want to be strategic in my approach to make sure I am not just throwing parts at the vehicle and hoping for the best.

Yep, I like your style, I do believe the TIPM is out looking at the codes that are begin outputted. Unfortunately testing the TIPM is difficult especially when the problem is intermittent. I can tell you they had big problem with the TIPM, and they go out frequently.

I pulled the TIPM and sent it in for diagnosis. It passed all of the tests and is operating as expected.

The next part I would have tested is the instrument cluster. Also have you tested all of the fuses with the system on? Here is how to remove the cluster. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

U0141 - Lost communication with IPM (FCM/TIPM) is the concerning code. How was the TIPM tested? It still sounds like it is bad. I would test the power and ground circuits to the TIPM. Here is a guide to help with the test and the TIPM wiring diagrams so you can see which wires are power or ground:

I am not certain how it was tested, but this is what the company said they would check" All repairs include inspecting internal PC Board(s) for defective components and/or traces. Corrosion if present will be mitigated and traces will be repaired. The TIPM case will be ultrasonically cleaned, and the external relays and fuses will be tested and replaced as needed. We replace components only with the latest revision from the Original Equipment Manufacturer that are substantially more reliable than the original versions."

After testing my TIPM, this was the techs diagnosis "Only issues found were external relays K3, K5 and K11 in bad working conditions."

They did go on to tell me "Stored error codes were read and most of them were related to lost communication between modules, including PCM. Since the Hot Oil light is displayed, there might be a open wire(s) that are connected to transmission or TCM. Check the wiring harness that runs above along the sway bar looking for damage, corrosion or loose connections. Another possible cause might be a faulty module or short circuit."

I did have them replace the fuel pump relay as a precaution, and they did a thorough cleaning of the TIPM before sending it back to me. I put it back in 4/30, and the jeep starts right up without any lights on the gauge cluster.

The toughest part about finding the issue is that it is intermittent. I have not been able to find a bad wire anywhere yet. The jeep does have a brand-new battery in it and all the grounds that I could find have been scrubbed with a wire brush and tightened down at this point.

Also, could the bad relays cause communication loss between modules in my vehicle? I found the following information in a forum "The system seems to also display the message when the transmission computer cannot communicate with the power control module. If the K5 relay is bad, it might not be able to communicate. When this happens, Chrysler wants to warn you and sends a Hot Oil message to be safe."

Okay, let's try to narrow this problem down, clean all codes and then without starting the engine turn the system on (key on) and then run the codes (CAN scan). BTW the TIPM is the only thing that supplies power to the other computers and modules.

This is what is said:

The code U0184 indicates that the TIPM has lost communication with the radio, which may result in the radio not functioning correctly or displaying an error message. This problem could be due to several reasons, such as a faulty radio, damaged wiring, or issues with the TIPM itself.

With the key on, does the radio work? If so, it points back to the TIPM.

Jeep started right up, and I allowed it to run for 30s before plugging in the Scan Tool. After completing an All Module Scan only one DTC is still active.

0mi - 7mi: TIPM - U0184 Active - Lost communication with Radio

8mi: Four new codes popped up on the TPM - Tire Pressure Monitor
C1580 - 00 Active Left/Right side tire pressure sensor location undetermined

9mi-15mi - The five codes above remained

No check engine light or any other dash light came on during the drive.

These are tire pressure codes and shouldn't have anything to do with the engine running. How did the jeep run on the drive? I would replace the TIPM with a new unit the problem could be intermittent, and the shop missed it. Also start a new question for the tire monitoring problem.

Overall the jeep runs just fine, I just don't know if I trust it long distance since it has had this same problem two times leaving us stranded.

Are there any other tests or checks I can do before just replacing the TIPM?
