Engine Performance problem
1993 Dodge Dakota 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 250K miles

I have a 1993 dodge Dakota. It is the V6 3.9L. My transmission went out a few months ago. The engine ran fine, but the transmission was messed up. So my brother and I changed out transmissions and now the truck runs like crap. It doesnt idle right and it backfires really bad. What did we do wrong? And how can we fix it?

Engine running rough or misfiring can be cause by the following:

1. Defective spark plug
2. Inadequate spark/coil, defective spark plug wire.
3. Lack of compression
4. False air leakage.
5. Faulty fuel injectors.
6. Insufficient fuel pressure.
7. Contaminated fuel.
8. EGR valve that is leaking.
9. Oxygen sensors.
10. Throttle position sensor.
11. Idle air control valve.

You may want to see if you broke or pinched the wires for the crankshaft position sensor located on back of engine above transmission bell housing. Also check to see if distributer cap may have been cracked during trans exchange.
