2006 Dodge Charger Shift gears

What does it mean when my car is in drive, it goes, but it wont change gears and the malfunction indicator light is on.

The light being on is the PCM's way of telling you it has recorded a fault in the system. If you have it scanned , the code will most likely lead to the fix for it not shifting.
