Engine Cooling problem
2000 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl Automatic 185000 miles

I have a very slow coolant leak that appears (based on the spotting) to be coming from the overflow tank or one of the hoses connected to it. The shop has it right now, and at first they thought it might be the year-old water pump, but then the tech called and said it was leaking behind the "engine cover, " and the whole cover would have to be replaced for about $1000. The only info I can find that sounds at all like what he describes is that maybe the radiator could be leaking behind the mount? But the dripping isn't coming from that side of the car. Any way this is legit?

The overflow tank was almost bone-dry, btw. We did fill that to mid-level.

The 6 cylinders did have leaks in this area. It is a cover plate that covers the engine timing belt and is used as part of a mount and passage for the water pump. It is called a front engine cover. The water pump mounts to it. If your not sure that you understand then you should have someone show you the leaking area. It's not wrong to get a second opinion. It is a difficult area for exact leak detection, but it must be removed at times to be sure of the exact location.

Aha! The water pump area makes way more sense. I couldn't seem to get a good description from the mechanic (he seemed to think I wouldn't understand if he used technical terms, so I just kept hearing "It's the engine cover, and it's expensive." Thanks for your help!

Yeah, it shouldn't be something that makes you not understand. He may be good but unable to communicate coreectly.
I am glad you thanked me. Thank-you
