There's 84 different kinds of "weird" noises. If it's a banging or metallic clanking sound, suspect a cracked flex plate. That can cause a no-start condition. The Check Engine light staying on means a diagnostic fault code has been memorized by the engine computer. Possibly a failure of the crankshaft position sensor to detect the holes on the flex plate. That will create the no-start.
