Dashboard message "check gas cap"

For several months the "check gas cap" appears frequently. Last week emission warning appeared. Manual said if just filled tank and check gas cap appears to check the cap, if emission light goes out all is okay. This appeared to work, next day emission light came on but went away.

It has been a week since the emission warning appeared. Bought a new cap yesterday the check gas cap message occasionally appears.

Hello, I am Danny.

Since you have installed a new gas cap have you erased the check engine light codes? After a fuel fill up be sure to tighten the gas cap an extra three "clicks" when tightening to ensure a tight seal. If you do not have access to a code reader to clear codes you might want to disconnect the battery for ten minutes and the reconnect to clear existing codes.
