Welcome to 2CarPros.

Are you certain you have spark? Does it sound normal when cranking? Since you have no RPM signal, that is usually a good indicator that the crankshaft position sensor is bad. But you shouldn't be getting spark.

Here are a few links that discuss the sensor I mentioned. They also discuss symptoms of a bad one and in general how one is replaced.

Also, if you smell gas, and you do have spark, then there is a chance a timing belt has broken, jumped time, or even a bad head gasket causing low compression. A timing belt issue will usually cause the engine to sound odd when cranking it. If you can record it cranking and upload it, I should be able to tell if that is a concern.

I strongly recommend removing the plugs and seeing if they are wet with fuel. Let me know. Also, here is a link that explains how to check for spark. In case you did something differently, try this process.

If the plugs are out, check compression at the same time.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Rained most of day. Late getting back at it.
Turning over sounds okay to me. Do have spark, no rpm's on tachometer. (!) ( Crankshaft sensor measures 700 ohms, some where I think I read should be around 550 ohms?) I'll double check that gap at crank sensor
pulled plugs, they are wet and worn out. Need new ones and I'll get a loner compression checker.
I'm checking out your links won't get back at the car until weekend or later. Thanks Joe.

Welcome back:

Let me know what you find. If you need a compression gauge, most parts stores will lend you one. At least you won't have to purchase one.

Thank you for the help. Got the old Mazda to start. New plugs, full battery charge, taped crack in air inlet between air filter/sensors and engine. Baffled why it didn't show any rpm's during the crank no start condition?

Welcome back:

Interesting. I'm near Pittsburgh and they all have them around here. Lol How is it running for you? Any misfires you can feel or odd smells from the exhaust?

Let me know.
