Cranking but not starting

I drove the car for a couple of hours during the day yesterday came home parked it for a couple of hours, got back in and a crank but it would not start. It sounded like it wanted to start but was already started. I tried it again a few minutes later and it sounded like it wanted to misfire backfire or the noise it made was like 'ca pwuutt' almost like the engine farted (excuse me if you will).

Anyway, many things can cause a vehicle not to start. Here is a link that discusses what to check specific things related to a no start.
