Clutch 'whines' when not engaged, yet is silent when depressed. I cannot shift into gears easily at all. When I do get it into 1st or 2nd, my car runs beautifully until some to shift again. It will not go into other gears.

Check fluid level in reservoir make sure it is full. The whine may be a bad pilot bearing in end of crank. Check cables at trans may be out of adjustment, broken or frayed not allowing you to other gears. Try shifting to other gears with engine off is still won't go disconnect cables and see if it will that will tell you it's a cable problem. They can be broken at trans or shifter as well as shifter worn out.
