I just purchased a 1998 Chevy Cavalier and it won't shift past 2nd gear. I have checked compression and it is good. It sounds like it is trying to shift but does not and it is starts rough then settles down after it warms up. Do you think it is the transmission. We know that the first plug is miss firing.

I really dont think they are related but fix the misfore before you tackle the trans issue, just check the fluid first

My 1997 Cavalier has a hard time shifting into 3rd gear. It is full of fresh fluid and has had a the filter replaced in December 2006.

I was told it is a tranny celenoid. Is it easy to replace?

Also, when sitting all night if I don't let the car warm up for 3-5 minutes it doesn't go into Drive right away. Reverse is fine, but it will go into Drive slowly. It only does this first thing in the morning. After wards it is fine.

It has 174k miles.

Are these two problems related?
