I have been having some problems with the trany lately and cant seem to find out what it is.
first the service enging soon light comes on
second I loose all gears except 3rd gear
it still drives but its real sluggish due to it only being in 3rd gear.
second gear still works but I have to shift manualy.
the trany is a automatic I dont know exactly what the model is.
now this happens off and on, its not a constant problem
thank you for your help.

Your unit is a 4l60e, is the light on, ? Most of the problems that occur with your unit are valve body related, if the mileage is low on the unit there is a valvebody service cost about 3-400 bucks and may fix your issues as long as the fluid looks goo, red in color and not burned, let us know

The fluid looks good on it and its got about 120,000 mi on it.
I dont know what the valve body is but that sounds mechanical. Im pretty sure that this problem is electrical.
The trany runs fine when the service enginge soon light is out, when the service engine soon light comes on all I have is 3rd gear.
I have askes several machanics about this problem and every one of them have told me it dosnt make any sence. I have some basic knowledge about cars but when it comes to this computer controled cars im lost. So the question still stands.
What would make a trany loose all the gears like that?

Thank you for your reply jim but before I go spending 3-400 bucks I really want to make sure exactly what the problem is.

Very simple , the pan comes down , and the valve body is right there , abot 15 bolts it comes down and there are all of the valves and solenoids , there are amll mods along with replacing the solenoid that can be done to make it shift better and the pulse width modulator is changed to work or not work instead of coming half off or on , check around on pricing you may have better luck with a small shop that does transmission only and has been around for a while
