When I fill up, the gauge will rise while filling (key turnd on to assc) and as soon as the tank fills, the gauge falls to below empty. After 24-48 hours, the gauge will then register that there is gas in the tank, and it is close to the correct amount (may be correct, no way of really telling). If I do a partial fill up, the gauge works properly. I'm thinking I've got an electrical problem and not a float problem, but I have no way of really knowing. Can you please help?

You need to see if you are getting power to the sending unit first. If it is then it may be a guage problem. A test light would work on this, just find the right wire. One will be ground, one for pump and another for the guage. The guage will eitehr be low voltage or blinking light.
