2003 Chevy Trailblazer air bag light is on

The air bag light is on most of the time-it does go off sometimes. The dealer said it needs a system diagnostic mudular for over $500-but I really don't trust them. I have heard that a bad connector can cause the same problems. I understand that the airbags probably won't work with the light on so I want to figure this out soon. Thanks for any info you can offer. Ellie

Having it scanned for codes will give us a direction to go in. There is a recall on inspection of the drivers side air bag for a condition that will keep the bag from possibly inflating all of the way. There are also a few TSB's (tech service bulletins) about replacing the wiring harnesses to the air bag module on drivers side.
