1989 Chevy Silverado 4 wheel drive does not seem to work

If I engage the 4 wheel drive into 4 low it feels as if it is engage but if I gas it only the rear wheel spin in dirt and the 4 wheel drive light does not light up. Same thing goes for 4 high. Any suggestion please let me know!

I need to ask a question. Is this an electric shift 4wd or manul shift 4wd? If manual, follow the vacuum lines from the engine to the top of the transfer case. Make sure they are attached and not damaged. If the light isn't coming on, there is a vacuum operated switch there that both sends vacuum to the 4wd and the light that may be bad or just a disconnected hose. Many times they dry rot or melt.

If it is electric shift, I need to know if you are getting power to the electric actuator on the transfer case.
