Grinding sound when starting car

Hi.I have a problem with my 95 cavalier. About half the time when I start it, the engine will start to turn over but before the car has a chance to start, it stops turning over and I hear a grinding noise. Usually after several attempts I can get it started, but it's getting worse. I am a student and don't have very much money so I was hoping I could fix it myself, but I need to know what the problem is first.

Help! Please!

Sounds like the starter solenoid is retracting before it starts. The gear on the starter backs off and grinds on the flywheel. If it isn't taken care off, it will chew up the flywheel. Get a good starter- I like napa or usa brand myself. If your gonna get a cheap one, I would go to a junk yard first.

Good luck in your studies :)
