Grinding 3rd gear

I have a 97 cavalier z24 w/ a 2.4L twin cam 155g miles and 5-speed manual transmission. My problem is that 3rd gear grinds up and down shifting. No other gear has this problem. I've had this car for 2yrs and since I've had to shift 1st, 2nd, revrs so that revrs did not grind, otherwise revrs would grind. 3rd gear has only started grinding just recently. Is it the synchronizer or the clutch itself?

Sounds like a synchro to me ! Had a car that would do that to me in the past.

Could a rookie mechanic replace a synchro or would that be best suited to be done by a pro?

I wouldnt recomend doing it your self. But you might want to go to the library and find a book on that tranmission andd just look at what your going to be getting into ifyou do decided to do it on your own. Other wise I say take it to a shop and have it done.
