CHEVY S10 SURGES BETWEEN 45-55 MPH

I have a 2000 chevy s10 2.2 liter auto with 97000 miles and when I drive it staying below 40 is fine and above 60 it's fine. However between 45 and 55 at a steady speed it surges. I changed the plugs, wires, and fuel filter, and I still have the problem.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

No check engine lights are on--transmission place said it was the transmission and wants to put in a trottle body kit for $450.

Valvebody,

if that is the problem, if, that is a fair price, the pcm should still kick out a code at least p1870
