I have a 3.8 that now squeals continually at idle. It started off as an intermittent chirping about a week ago immediately after I replaced the PCV valve. I just replaced the belt today (we noticed some cracks in the ribs) and it still makes the noise. I can only say for sure that the noise is in the front of the car. When I listen to the right side I would swear it comes from that side, then I move to the left and I'm equally positive it comes from that side. I'm stumped. What do you think? Thank You.

I saw your post and I am having very similar problems. I have a 2006 V6 Impala. Does your car also squeal or whine on acceleration?

No. Not on acceleration, only at idle. I'm narrowing it down to something in the air line I think, I'll keep you posted.

Cory42k,

It sounds like one of the components that are driven by the serpentine belt has a bad bearing. You might try removing the belt and turning the pulleys by hand and looking for a rough feel or wobble. I'd be especially suspicious of the belt tensioner.

Also, a whining sound could be the Power Steering Pump needing the fluid level replenished. In this case, the whining won't go away on accelleration, but the whine will get a higher pitch.
