Hi, I drive a 2003 Chevy Impala. I've noticed recently is makes a squeaking/squealing sound while in motion. I recorded what it sounded like...here's the link....

I'm thinking maybe it's the breaks. My mechanic told me I didn't need new breaks until my next oil change. Maybe I need them sooner. I need to drive my car from Wisconsin to New York in a few days and I'm very concerned. I won't have money to fix it until I'm in New York.

Thank you soo much!! -Melissa

That sounds more like a rattling idler pulley for the serpentine belt on the engine. The clue is it will be noisy when the engine is running even when the car is not moving. A brake wear indicator will only squeak when the car is moving and they usually quiet down when you press the brake pedal.

We don't get involved with costs here because there's way too many variables. We don't know for sure it's an idler pulley or which one. We don't know which engine you have or the hourly labor rates in your area. The best approach is to have a mechanic listen to it and give you an estimate for the repairs. What part of Wisconsin are you in?
