I have a '99 Chevrolet cavalier Z-24 convertible and my headlight switch on the steering column keeps burning out. It seems fine if I don't use the high beams at all. But if I do, the switch starts to malfunction. First the headlights won't come on unless you hold the switch stick a little forward( I use a book of matches), then after a while the switch fails altogether and the headlights don't come on at all. I've replacement this switch assembly about four times now. When I take the switch out you can see on the plugs going into the back of the switch that the plug has been overheated and scorched. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The switch malfunctioning is probably caused by the heads light bulbs or their connections. Clean the connections to remove any extra resistance that it may be causing. You may have to replace the bulbs too.
