1991 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My car is a 91 Chevy Cavalier, we just replaced the sparkplug wires, because we were told that was our problem, which I believe it was part of it, but there seems to be another problem. The car is making a loud sound when it it sitting still or going slow, it is taking a long time to get the car up to even 35mph and we can smell gas very strong. It was suggested it might be the catalytic converter any ideas?

Check fuel rail, injector seals, rubber hoses etc. For leaks.

If convertor is bolted on, unbolt it and look inside, you should see a white/tan honeycomb. If black or melted, then convertor is clogged and would have to be replaced.
