My chevrolete runs okay, but when I go to crank my car up it makes a loud grinding sound. Its turning over but it makes this sound in the process and I usually have to let it make that sound for a second to the engine finally turns over and the car cranks up. I also have to hit the gas in the process so that it will crank up. Some friends say its the starter?

Hi datniggadub05. Welcome to the forum. There's two possibilities. The shaft the starter drive slides on could have rust or gunked up impacted grease preventing the drive gear from fully engaging the ring gear, but more likely, you need to add a shim between the starter and engine. Replacement starters come with one or two shims in case they are needed. Often they are not and almost every mechanic has extra ones in their stash of parts. If you're on friendly terms with a mechanic, there's a good chance they'll give you a couple of shims. If one lessens the noise but it's not totally gone, add a second shim.
