1983 Chevy Camaro V8 Manual 26,000 miles

I've had to replace the starter twice in four months. It would have been three but the last time I took the starter out myself and had it tested and it was fine. The guy that tested it said they put the wrong screws in. What happens is one day I'll go to start it and turn the key and there'll be a high-pitched grinding sound and then it won't start. It gradually gets harder to start in the 2 months prior.

A high pitch whine during cranking indicates excessive clearance between the flexplate and pinion drive-did you shim it?

No, I haven't. It seems like the last place I took it to did, but used some kinda make-shift washers. I did put the starter back in and it seems to be okay. I think the bolts keep loosening and that's part of the problem. I found one of the bolts and the janky washers that hold it in on the ground last time this happened. Do you know why
that would happen or how I could prevent it?

Get a different lock washer and torque it-don't break the bolt
