I just inherited a 1987 blazer that is in great shape with the exception of a little rust. Anyway, the vehicle sat for many years before I got it but it started right up and ran great. I was trying out the 4 wheel drive unit. It went into 4 low, neutral, 4 high fine. The problem is when I shifted out of 4 high to 2 wheel drive the lights on the panel diagram stays on showing it still has front wheels engaged. The 4 wheel light as well as the other lights on the panel are all off. I can tell by the way it sounds and drives it is hung up in 4 high. How can I get it back to 2 wheel drive and will this happen every time I shift into 4 wheel mode. Any help you can offer will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

There is a small vacuum switch on the left side of the transfer case that is likely stuck open which allows vacuum to go to the acuator under the battery box. It is easy to get to and replace.

As for your comment on the switch you stated it was on the left side and it goes up under battery box. My question is left side is what I call drivers side but battery is on the passenger side. Does the vacuum line run all the way across the vehicle. Please tell me if the switch is on driver or passenger side so I can easily find since I am not sure what it looks like. If I take the switch off to get replacement can I drive the vehicle.

You misunderstood me

The vaccum switch is on the left side of the transfer case, underneath the drivers side.

The vaccum switch controls the "actuator" which is found under the battery box, when the actuator gets vaccum it engages the front axle, and if the vaccum switch gets stuck open then it keeps vaccum to the actuator which keeps the front axle engaged.
