Car turns on and off by itself?

My SUV will come on by itself from time to time. Dashboard lights up and various clicking sounds come from the lower left side of dash near floorboard. If we lock the doors and this happens, the alarm goes off. We leave the doors unlocked, keep the interior lights off and turn the headlights to the off position. This seems to make it happen less.

The description sounds like one of the door latches isn't locking fully and as the conditions around it change the switch in it triggers the system and wakes up the vehicle. A common one for this is the hood latch switch located with the hood latch in the front center. An easy way to find out the issue is to use a good scan tool and access the "Tripped Sensor Recall" and it will show you what latch is tripping the alarm. So, it would tell you something like Hood Latch or Right Front Door. Then you can easily repair the problem.

Thanks, I will get that checked. Just to clarify what I meant by the dashboard lighting up though. Everything comes on as if I had hit the start button.
