The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

Engine Performance problem
2001 Mercury Mountaineer V8 All Wheel Drive Automatic

My Mountaineer engine light has gone on. Had it diagnosed and was told problem in cylinder 5, so had complete tune up with new set of wires. Light stayed on and recently vehicle gas mileage has gone down significantly.

Ideas?

Is the same code stored in the computer? Also, does it seem to run good and still have the same power it should?

There are well over 2,000 defects that can be detected, and about half of them turn on the Check Engine light. Only a very tiny percentage of those codes are caused by the parts you listed. You need to know the exact fault code number(s) to know where to start the diagnosis.

Hi SCICCANTELLI24,

If you decide you would like to conduct the scan yourself here is a link to an article that features written step by step instructions and pictures explaining how to do the scan yourself. Also, I have included a link to our YouTube channel with a how to video on code scanning.

This is applicable even if your check engine light is not on.

Most scanners are inexpensive to purchase, you can purchase one online from sites like Amazon.com

Once you have the codes please get back to us so that we can further assist you. We are always happy to help.

Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.com.

Kindest regards,

Took in for Smog check at a smog only station in CA.
They can not do any type of repairs under state law.
Said my car passed but that they couldn't issue me a certificate as my check engine light bulb was burnt out. How do I change this bulb?

Hi Avaquinn;

I just need to know a few answers to a couple of questions. So I know I can give you the instructions you need.

(1) Does your instrument cluster look like this with "White gauges and red pointers" ?

https://www.2carpros.com/forum/automotive_pictures/433905_Untitled3_1.jpg

Or "Black gauges" with white pointers?

(2) Do they look identically the same as yours with (Tach & Speedometer) in the center, (Fuel & Temperature) at the left. (Oil & Battery) at the right? If you answered "YES" to questions 1&2 continue reading. I have the information you need to replace the bulb.

(3) Looking at the instrument cluster picture with the "White Gauges" at the left in the area of (Fuel &Temperature) you can see a little yellow spot just about on the center "edge"... that is the check engine light. (White or Black instrument clusters check engine light locations are identical).
Your bulb has burned out and you need to replace it so it will illuminate and everyone is smiling and they can issue you a certificate?
If you answered "Yes" to question (3), I have the "step" by "step" instructions to replace that bulb.

You will need a 7 MM socket with a small extension and a ratchet "1/4 inch drive" if it is available, if not ...what ever you have.
In the "step by step" instructions, you will be removing the entire "White" or "Black" instrument cluster from the dash. It sounds pretty heavy duty..but it is not bad at all, I'll guide you right through it.

Knowing the instrument cluster needs to be completely or partially removed to gain access to the back of the instrument cluster where all the bulbs are located....do you want to continue?
Again... I will guide you through it step by step...with pictures.
Just let me know and we will get that bulb replaced guaranteed.
Rick

Hello,
My Check Engine Light came on last night and the gauge said that the temperature was way past the High point. The mechanic told me that my timing cover gasket was rotted out and that it was probably good to get my water pump replaced at the same time even though I didn't need to. He said my radiator was empty and that the cooling system needed to be flushed out. Total cost: $730. Is this reasonable? Please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you!

That sounds about right. The check engine light most likely came on due to the fact the coolant sensor went out of range because they cant read air, only fluid so when the coolant level dropped it quit working.
