I got a code from the car saying it was low on refrigerant. Idutifully added some refrigerant but can't get the a/c pump to cycle on. Heck I can't even get the the message to go away.

The codes must be cleared before the system will allow itself to be turned back on. If it was working b3efore the code, then it is most likely the system pressure sensor that is bad, common for these cars.
Key on, engine off
Hold down "off " & "Warmer" at the same time. The screen will change, this means you are in self-diagnostics.
Press fan low button until ACM? Is displayed
press up fan until ACM CODES is displayed
Press fan down until CLEAR ACM CODES appears.
Press fan up until ACM codes clear is displayed.
