Engine Performance problem
1990 Cadillac El Dorado V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 1990 Eldo with 97K milles, bought used with 75K. I use the car about 2 months a year, and stored in a heated garaged when not in use. I just completed a round trip MN to VA. Going to VA, I got the normal 24 MPG and no problems with maintaining 'highway' speeds to VA. The Service Engine light came on for about 15 miles near my destination then went out. The return trip yielded roughly 14 MPG and almost powerless on hills - felt like spark retarding rather than advancing under load. I have not tried to pull the codes - yet. I'm assuming sensors? Its an old car - and I prefer not to pay the local Caddy dealers boat payment. Any suggestions? Sensors?

Many thanks,
Ted Steppe

You could see if AutoZone or Napa have the scanner capable of reading those old computers. If not, you'll have to jump the ALDL connector and read them from the dash.

Also, when is the last time you changed the plugs and wires, as well as the fuel and air filters. This may very well fix your problem. If not, pull the codes before spending money chasing the problem.
