what could cause my a/c to stop cooling sometimes, it will start off working fine & then it will stop cooling, it fills like its blowing fresh air though the vents, sometimes you can turn it off &wait a little while & it will come on & maybe it won't?

Without looking at system pressures when this happens, there could be a few possibilities. The compressor could be shutting down for various reasons. If the system is still pumping, it could be restriction causing icing, or a malfunctioning expansion device. The fact the shutting it down for a period brings back cooling, I would suspect the latter. You would need to have the system checked out.
