2001 Buick Lesabre Stalled suddenly and running badly

I was driving my car today. As I was exiting the freeway, the car died. It started back up but was acting really shaky and didnt want to stay started. It was not smoking but it had a horrible smell. As if something was burning. Again, no smoke. I got it home and popped the hood and heard a weird screech when I gave it gas. I have no idea what this could be! The check engine light is now on also

The check engine light is the easiest way to start to diagnose a problem. It could be something simple and cheap, or it cound be something major and expensive. Without getting your car scanned for codes, its hard to say what the problem is. For it to just die could be caused by a bad cranksensor, but without an engine code, we cannot be certain.
