Do you have spark at the plugs with the engine cranking? Are there any codes?

If there is an oil pressure switch in the fuel pump circuit, once you crank it enough to build oil pressure, the switch closes and the fuel pump runs, so you have pressure, but, if the pcm isn't pulsing the injectors for some reason, there won't be any gas in the cylinders.

My first thought was maybe an intermittent signal from the crank or cam sensor? I'm not saying replace anything, you could do some testing.
