2000 BMW Z3 Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Manual 50,000 miles

I recently took my z3 to have the service engine soon light checked and to have my oil changed and when they put it on the diagnostic computer they said there was a problem with the fuel tank and done a "smoke test" and said I had a crack in my gas tank and would have to replace it. Then they said that once they took out the gas tank it was fuel lines that were cracked or split or "chewed by something" and would have to change those. What I wanted to know is if the fuel lines could have been changed without having to replace the fuel tank that was over $800 and said would take over 2 days of labor to replace it?
