I just bought a 95 bmw 325 I convertible which had been sitting for 3 years in a garage. I had it towed to a mechanic who told me the fuel pump is not working, might be bad gas. Of course, the reason I had it towed was to avoid running the car on bad gas. The mechanic now changes the story to say they never ran the fuel pump on bad gas, they ran it on some other fuel separate from the gas in the tank. My question: can a fuel pump which was working fine three years ago, go bad just sitting or does one have to run bad gas through it to destroy it? Thank you.

Age will absolutely kill a pump, especially if it sits. I have replaced several dozen of those pumps in the E-36 body style cars, they do fail quite often.

It is always good to get a second opinion if the first is questionable.
