Engine backfires on startup

It cranks but will not start, it will backfire. Can you assist me with the reasons that will cause this problem?
i took out the EGR valve. I check the timing, the timing chain have some slack on it. Do you think this is the problem?

Yes, it can. The way to confirm it is to check the compression. If the compression is low, most likely the timing chain could be the issue.
