97 S-10 Starting Issues

I have a 97 S10 pickup with a 4.3 V6 engine in it and it is at 121000 miles. After it sits for a few hours or overnight and I try to start it, it sounds like its going to start but does not. Although if I leave the key in the halfway position for a second and try to start it fires right up. What may cause this?

Relplace the fuel filter, when you put the key in the ignition half way it puts power to the electric fuel pump has more of a chance to build up pressure to the engine.
