I own a 67 Galaxie with a 289, auto-glide tranny. I am attempting to restore-mod, but I am having a difficult time trying to get the engine to start right away. It takes at least 5-10 tries to get it started, then I have to stay on the accelerator for at least 5 minutes before she will idle without dying. Can you help point me in the right direction?
Thanks,

Sounds like a stuck choke or lazy choke

Yes, I agree with the choke comment. Most of the time, you will find that this is the problem. What you should do is when the engine is cold, hit the gas pedal all the way to the floor, then take you foot off it, go out and take the air filter off the carb, look down inside and you should see the butterfly closed all the way. If it is not, this is your problem. You will need to adjust it so it will close all the way when the engine is cold. If you find that it is closed, then there is one more thing to check. You injector pump in your carb may be bad. Hold your choke open, look down your carb, push the throttle linkage all the way open, see if you see a squirt of gas go into the carb. It should be one continue squirt, as long as the linkage on the carb is moving. Some times the material will dry up and not make a good seal, and the injector will not work. Once the car is running on the highway, you will not notice a bad injector, only when the engine is running at low RPM will the bad injector really show up. But once again, check the choke out first. Good luck
