When at idle, the oil pressure gauge indicates that the oil pressure is eratic. Spiking to near zero frequently, but immediately back up. When throttling up, the pressure increases and remains steady. Is this normal?

No have the oil pressure tested with a pressure gague. If no problem found the oil sender maybe faulty replace. I think on that engine oil sender is located top rear of engine should be a gold little can thing.
