Engine Cooling problem
1997 Questions for all other cars Manual 77124 miles

I have a V reg (1997) Rover 416i E. I replaced the 4 way water hose as it had split - the engine was overheating (not shown on the temp guage on the dash) & cutting out.

Since changing the water hose the engine is still overheating (now showing on the dash) & cutting out.

Can anyone give me any advise please? I'm a female with very limited car knowledge so advice in 'layman's' terms would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Moonlight,

Is the coolant level correct? Air in the system or low coolant level would cause overheating.

Are the radiator fans working?

Others to check are the thermostat and water pump.

Hi KHLow2008,

Thank you so much for your reply. I appreciate it.

I've checked the coolant level and it looks correct. The radiator fans are working and so is the water pump.

Where is the thermostat please? Is it at the outlet or the inlet pipe to the radiator from the engine?

Thanks again,
Moonlight

Hi Moonlight,

The thermostat is under the housing connected to the lower radiator hose.

Hi again KHLow2008,

I will check the thermostat. Now I know where it is ;o)

I checked the upper hose as it seemed to be the obvious place to me and couldn't find it but I didn't check the lower radiator hose. I must admit, I was stumped after that so thank you so much again for your help and advise.

Yours gratefully,
Moonlight
