I originally had lukewarm/cool air coming out so I went to charge it and initially it was ice cold. I drove 20 miles and parked then got back in to drive back and the air was no longer cold it is now warm/hot air back and forth. I don't know what I need to look into doing first.

Sounds like it has a large leak. That needs to be found and repaired before anything else is done.

Here is a guide to trace down the leak:

Another method is to add a dye to the system and then use a UV light to find it will glow at the leak site. Check both of the ports and each fitting on the system, then look at the two cores. Once you find the leak you would replace the defective part and then pull a vacuum on the system to see if it holds.

Once it holds a vacuum you can recharge it with the correct amount and see if it all works.
