If the speedometer cluster is bad. Then why does it work ok after you turn the key off and back on.

If I buy used one will I have to get it reprogramed or the PCM reprogramed thru the dealer? How much would that be.

Can you give me a ballpark cost to have it diagnosed by a dealer.

The dealers Ive checked want over 500.00 for a new speedometer cluster. Would it have to be reprogramed. Are we talking $900.00 to get a new one put in.

Diagnosis should only be a hour or two of labor. Dont believce it needs to be programed. That is why I said to check the connections. If it is borderline, vibration or heat can cause it to lose the connection, but when key is cycled it gets it back untilk it heats back up, something free to check

He also said the check engine light went out. I dont know what to think. What would you do. Hes a plumber and works 16 hours a day so thats I havent been able to check it out. A longer test drive for sure.

Even with the light out, it has stored a code. Have him stop by an Autozone and have it scanned (they do it free) get back to me with the code/codes

Check fuses as a 1st step
check battery terminals and wires at and around it
if all checked out OK suspect BCM
try and scan for codes in the BCM
disconnect battery wait a min and reconnect try if all back to normal suspect BCM (body control modul)
I would suspect bad fuse and or wire check if fuses and links OK (use a test light and or volt meter )

Gages stopped working; signal lights stopped working; headlights come on when engine is started without turning on headlights; wipers work if turned on before engine is started do not work if turned on after engine is started; radio not controllable from steering wheel controls; dash led display reads: "no bus" ; autozone says they can't attach a scanner to read obd codes, the same was stated by a dodge dealership, the said the problem would have to be chased with a vom.

My odometer says no bus the instrument cluster doesn't work all lights are on and gauges are all not working, nor does anything on the steering column. No blinkers, high beam, cruise, four ways, brake lights and wipers don't work. After it sits for a while everything will work again for a while then the same thing. Had the fuse box out and checked all the connections underneath it looks alright no corrosion. Put dialectic grease on the contacts and put it back together. It worked for awhile then the same thing. Any ideas. Also when we tried to do a diagnostic with scan tool we were getting an error

It sounds like you have a TIPM that is out which is common. You will need to have a shop program it in for you to get the car to work again. Here is the TIPM location so you can see what you are in for when doing the job.

(Check out the diagrams below.)

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

Thanks for your quick reply. I think I need to rephrase my question. I have read no bus means that the instrument cluster is not receiving the required information it needs to operate I am wondering which wires this operates on so I can trouble shoot these to see if it's just a simple wiring issue i.E. Corroded connector or wire. Before spending $700 on a new cluster. Also why would a defective cluster cause my brake lights and controls on the steering column to quit working at them same time?

Thanks again for your reply. Unfortunately I've already taken this to a shop and a professional scan tool has been used as I stated in my first question. The data port is not working and this also seems to be part of the above problems thus it can not retrieve any codes to tell me what is wrong. You really have not answered anything I already new that "no bus" was a communication problem. With the cluster not receiving any info I was only wondering which modules and there location it would be receiving info from so I could check the wiring to see if there was any corrosion that might be causing the trouble. I've always found that checking the simple things first, and if that does not solve the problem then take it to a shop. I work with wiring every day and have in the past worked on networks and all communications happen over some type of wiring it would be nice to eliminate that first. So once I did that I had the TIMP replaced for the tune of $650.00 bucks and the problem went away the truck is working great again. Thanks for your help. I love this site.

Most scan tools cannot access communications networks or give you the information you need. This requires a specialized DRB scan tool that can access the modules that are working and identify the ones not communication. There are numerous modules on this network including ABS, Airbag, PCM. BCM, Instrument cluster, lighting modules, traction modules, etc, etc. You are not equipped to diagnose this properly.

Glad you could get it fixed, that kind of problem can be tough. Please use 2CarPros anytime we are here to help

Cheers

I fixed that before. You have to get wiring diagram for network modules on your car. Than see what type of network it is: Star, Serial, Serial-Paraller, Multiplex. Basically What happens is when one module on network goes dead or shorts internally it will shut down whole network so what you wana do is disconnect modules ONE AT A TIME on that network till your dash comes back to life. Now that you found a glitching module diagnose further or replace. I'm not ASE certified but common sense always wins.

Okay, lets use this wiring diagram to see if the cluster is getting power and grounds. Also check fuse 1 and 7

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-fuse

and

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-test-light-circuit-tester

Please check each power feed and ground

Please let us know what happens.

Best, Ken

2002 Dodge Ram 2500 approx. 90k miles

My husband is in the USAF and is currently over-seas, leaving me in the U.S. And our truck (my only means of transportation) will not start. When I went to go and start the truck, it wouldn't and all the gauges aren't working. I talked to DODGE and they said to bring it in to hook it up and check for codes, but they want $90. And I don't even have that. 2 things come across my screen that says "NO BUS" & "CCD" I haven't the faintest idea what it means, but I've been walking my son about 2 miles to and from school each day, as we don't have a vehicle now. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know! I could really use any help in any direction! Oh, the electrical is fine, because the lights come on, and the truck "dings" when I have the door open. The truck sounds like it wants to kick up, but won't turn over all the way.

The control cluster is not coming on, no dash lights, no gauges work, no interior lights work, but the heat works and the radio works. All the fuses are good.
